Serengeti National Park

The name "Serengeti" derives from the Maasai word "siringet," meaning "the place where the land runs on forever" — an apt description for a park that spans 14,763 km² of short-grass plains, acacia woodland, and riverine forest across northern Tanzania. Established as a national park in 1951 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, the Serengeti forms the core of the vast Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, an unbroken 30,000 km² wilderness that spills across the border into Kenya's Masai Mara. Its landscape is anchored by ancient granite outcrops called kopjes — weathered remnants of the region's volcanic past that rise from the plains like natural fortresses and shelter everything from black-maned lions to leopards draped across their branches.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is the collapsed cone of an extinct volcano that, geologists estimate, once stood as tall as Kilimanjaro before it erupted and imploded roughly 2-3 million years ago, leaving behind the world's largest intact, unflooded volcanic caldera. The crater floor sits some 610 metres below the rim and spans 260 km², encircled by steep walls that rise up to 600 metres — a natural amphitheatre that traps an extraordinary concentration of wildlife within a self-contained ecosystem. The wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area, at 8,292 km², is unique in Tanzania as a UNESCO World Heritage Site where wildlife conservation and Maasai pastoralist life coexist under a single multiple-land-use mandate.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park takes its name from the Tarangire River, the lifeline that cuts through its 2,850 km² of rolling hills, seasonal swamps, and grassland dotted with some of Tanzania's oldest and most dramatic baobab trees — several estimated at well over a thousand years old, their swollen trunks a defining image of the northern Tanzanian landscape. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours, Tarangire is in fact the third-largest national park in northern Tanzania and offers a distinctly different character: quieter, wilder, and shaped as much by its ancient trees as by its animals.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park occupies a narrow, dramatic strip of land at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, where a wall of forested cliffs rises over 600 metres above the shallow, alkaline lake that gives the park its name. Though compact at just 648 km² — two-thirds of which is the lake itself — Manyara packs in a striking variety of habitats within a small footprint: dense groundwater forest, open grassland, acacia woodland, and the lake's own shoreline, each supporting a different slice of the park's wildlife.

Mahale Mountains

The Mahale Mountains rise directly from the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, the world's longest and second-deepest freshwater lake, creating one of the most dramatically beautiful and genuinely remote national parks in Africa. Accessible only by boat or light aircraft — there are no roads into Mahale — the park protects 1,613 km² of pristine rainforest cascading down steep mountain slopes to a shoreline of white sand beaches lapped by crystal-clear water.

Katavi National Park, in Tanzania's remote far west, is among the least-visited yet most rewarding parks in the country — a place where a full day can pass without encountering another vehicle. Covering 4,471 km² of miombo woodland, open floodplain, and seasonal lakes, Katavi represents Tanzania at its most unfiltered: wildlife behaving exactly as it would without an audience.

Ruaha National Park is Tanzania's largest national park at 20,226 km², and one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Africa — yet it remains one of the least visited, a genuine anomaly given the quality of what it offers. Located in the country's remote southern circuit, Ruaha sits at a rare ecological crossroads where the flora and fauna of East and southern Africa overlap, giving it a species list unlike anywhere else in Tanzania. The Great Ruaha River, which cuts through the park's heart, is the reason nearly everything here happens where it does.

Nyerere National Park, renamed from the Selous Game Reserve in 2019 in honour of Tanzania's founding president Julius Nyerere, is Africa's largest protected area at over 54,600 km² — roughly the size of Switzerland. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, Nyerere's sheer scale and its network of lakes, channels, and the Rufiji River, Tanzania's largest river, give it a diversity of safari activities found nowhere else in the country.

Tanzania is a year-round destination. Each season brings different advantages — from peak migration crossings to lush green landscapes and calving season drama.

Jun – Oct

Long Dry Season

Peak safari season. Best wildlife across all parks. Migration in Serengeti/Mara (Jul–Oct). Book 6–12 months ahead.

Nov – Dec

Short Rains

Short afternoon showers. Lush landscapes return. Good bird watching. Less crowded with better rates.

Jan – Feb

Short Dry Season

Excellent game viewing. Wildebeest calving (Jan–Feb) in southern Serengeti. Zanzibar at its best.

Mar – May

Long Rains

Heaviest rains. Some roads impassable. Very low visitor numbers and best lodge rates. Lush green scenery.

Calving in the Serengeti's south (Jan–Feb), north through the Seronera (Mar–Jun), Grumeti River crossings in the west (Jun–Jul), dramatic Mara River crossings in the north (Jul–Oct), then back south again. We design itineraries around wherever the herds are.
