Day-by-Day Itinerary
1Arrive Nyerere National Park
Arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam and transfer directly to your lodge on the banks of the Rufiji River inside Nyerere National Park. An optional sunset boat ride introduces you to the river hippos and crocodiles on your first evening.
2Nyerere National Park — Game Drives
Full day game drives in Nyerere — Tanzania's largest national park, covering 50,000 square kilometres of riverine forest, open grassland, and miombo woodland. Lion prides, elephant herds, buffalo, kudu, and giraffe are all reliably spotted across the varied terrain.
3Nyerere — Boat Safari on the Rufiji
Morning boat safari on the Rufiji River — one of East Africa's greatest waterways. Hippo pools, crocodile banks, and dense waterbird colonies line the shores. Elephant herds wade across at shallow crossings. This is walking and boat safari territory at its finest, with no vehicle restrictions on where guides can take you.
4Brief Nyerere Drive — Transfer to Mikumi
A final morning game drive in Nyerere before transferring north to Mikumi National Park. The drive passes through remote southern Tanzania countryside rarely seen by visitors.
5Mikumi National Park
Game drives across the Mkata floodplain — Mikumi's most productive wildlife habitat. Elephants, elands, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs all inhabit the park. Mikumi is often called "the Serengeti of the south" for its open grassland landscape and accessible big cat viewing.
6Udzungwa Mountains National Park
Drive to the Udzungwa Mountains — one of Tanzania's most biodiverse parks and a global conservation priority. Hike through montane forest to Sanje Waterfall, where you can swim in the natural pools beneath the falls. The forest shelters two endemic primate species and over 400 bird species, including many Albertine Rift endemics.
7Transfer to Ruaha National Park
Drive west to Ruaha National Park — a long but scenic journey through the southern highlands. Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park and one of the most exciting destinations on the continent for serious wildlife enthusiasts.
8Ruaha National Park — Full Day
Ruaha shelters Tanzania's largest populations of lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dog — the park's predator density is exceptional. Elephant herds number in the thousands. The Great Ruaha River is the lifeline of the park, drawing animals from across the region in the dry season. No crowds, no noise — just the wilderness in its purest form.
9Ruaha — Morning and Afternoon Drives
Another full day in Ruaha. Morning drives target the river areas where predators are most active at dawn. Afternoon drives push into the remote interior where rarely-visited areas harbour sable antelope, greater kudu, and oryx alongside the more common species.
10Departure — Dar es Salaam
Morning game drive in Ruaha, then transfer by road or light aircraft to Dar es Salaam for your international flight home.
