Ancient Rainforest and 13 Primate Species

About Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park protects one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse montane rainforests, covering 1,019 km² of the Congo-Nile divide. The forest shelters 13 primate species — including chimpanzees and Angola colobus monkeys in troops of up to 400 individuals, the largest primate grouping in Africa. Over 300 bird species have been recorded, with dozens of Albertine Rift endemics. The canopy walkway, suspended 50 metres above the forest floor, offers a rare bird's-eye perspective on this ancient ecosystem.
