Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Ol Pejeta Conservancy, on the equator in central Kenya, is a 360 km² private wildlife sanctuary that has become one of the most significant conservation sites in Africa — home to the last two northern white rhinos left on the planet, Najin and Fatu, kept under permanent armed guard as scientists pursue advanced reproductive techniques in a last effort to save the subspecies from extinction.

Beyond that singular distinction, Ol Pejeta holds East Africa's largest black rhino population and offers guaranteed Big Five viewing within a single, well-managed conservancy — a claim few Kenyan destinations can make with such consistency. The conservancy is also home to East Africa's only chimpanzee sanctuary, established as a haven for chimps rescued from illegal trafficking and difficult captive situations across the region, living in a large, naturalistic forested enclosure.

Ol Pejeta's status as a working conservancy rather than a national park allows for activities unavailable in most Kenyan reserves, including night game drives, guided walking safaris, and horseback safaris in designated areas, alongside conventional game drives across sweeping grassland with Mount Kenya visible on clear days. Its dedicated anti-poaching operations and community conservation model have also made it a genuine case study in modern wildlife protection, and guided visits explaining that work are widely available.

The dry seasons (June to October and January to February) provide the easiest wildlife viewing, though the conservancy's high density of animals within a defined area means game viewing remains strong year-round. Located roughly 300 km from Arusha and close to Nairobi, Ol Pejeta pairs naturally with the Masai Mara or Samburu as part of a broader Kenya itinerary, and its rhino conservation story alone makes it a compelling standalone stop.
