An early flight from Zanzibar crosses the Tanzanian coast and descends into Nyerere National Park — formerly the Selous Game Reserve and Africa's largest protected area at 54,600 km². Afternoon boat safari on the Rufiji River, threading through hippo pools and past crocodile-lined banks, with elephant and buffalo drinking at the water's edge. The Rufiji is one of East Africa's great wildlife waterways and often provides the most memorable sightings of the trip.
