Day-by-Day Itinerary

1Arrival in Arusha

Arrive at Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and meet your Extreme Wilderness Adventure representative. A warm welcome and short briefing precede a comfortable transfer to Kahawa House — a charming, well-located property in Arusha and the ideal launchpad for the days ahead. Rest well; the bush begins tomorrow.

Insider Fact

Arusha sits at 1,400 m — a comfortable acclimatisation buffer before the parks. Most operators service and restock their vehicles here between trips.

2Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, your private guide collects you for the 2.5-hour drive south to Tarangire. The ancient baobab trees — some over 1,000 years old — rise from the red earth like sentinels, and the elephant herds that move beneath them in numbers that stop you mid-sentence define the Northern Circuit. The Tarangire River draws extraordinary concentrations of wildlife in the dry season; lion, leopard, zebra, giraffe, oryx, and over 500 bird species spread across the park's varied terrain. Lunch at a scenic picnic site inside the park; late afternoon exit to the tented lodge on the shores of Lake Burunge.

Insider Fact

Tarangire holds the highest elephant density of any park on the Northern Circuit — herds of 200 or more are not uncommon during dry season when the river is the only water source for miles.

3Ngorongoro Crater & Serengeti National Park

An early departure to the Ngorongoro Crater rim — stop at the viewpoint: 20 kilometres across, 600 metres deep, 25,000 large mammals in permanent residence. The descent begins on a winding dirt road. Inside: lion prides relaxed around vehicles, vast zebra and wildebeest herds, the Ngoitoktok hippo pool as the midday lunch stop, flamingos on the soda lake, and the possibility of a black rhino sighting — the most reliably viewable population in East Africa. After the full crater game drive, the drive continues east into the Serengeti in time for sundowners at your tented camp.

Insider Fact

Ngorongoro is a closed ecosystem — the 600 m crater walls have contained a self-sustaining wildlife population for millions of years, making it the densest concentration of large mammals on earth.

4Full Day in Serengeti National Park

An early morning game drive as the bush comes to life — lion prides moving from overnight hunts, cheetahs using termite mounds as lookout posts, elephants crossing the plains in the cool morning air. The Serengeti covers 14,763 square kilometres and supports Africa's greatest predator concentration. The Great Migration circuit passes through annually; your guide knows the current position of the herds. Lunch at Naabi Hill Gate, afternoon drives continuing until the park sets the pace, then exit toward Karatu and overnight at Ngorongoro Farm House in the highland forest.

Insider Fact

The Serengeti supports over 3,000 lions — the largest population of any protected area on earth, and the most consistently visible to visitors.

5Lake Manyara & Return to Arusha

A final morning in the bush. After breakfast, the one-hour drive to Lake Manyara takes you through the agricultural highlands — coffee plantations and banana groves before the descent to the Rift Valley floor. Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions, a behaviour documented here for over sixty years and found nowhere else in East Africa outside Uganda's Ishasha. The park compresses an extraordinary range of habitats: dense groundwater forest with elephant and blue monkey, open floodplains, and the flamingo-lined soda lake against the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment. Game drive, picnic lunch inside the park, then north to Arusha for your farewell transfer.
