Day-by-Day Itinerary
1Arrival in Arusha
Arrive at Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and meet your Extreme Wilderness Adventure representative. Transfer to Kahawa House — a comfortable, characterful property in Arusha that serves as the ideal first night in Tanzania. Rest, settle in, and prepare for what the next five days have in store.
Insider Fact
Arusha sits at 1,400 m — cool evenings are common. Tanzania's adventure capital is the gateway to Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, and the entire Northern Circuit.

2Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, your private guide collects you for the 2-hour drive south to Tarangire. The park's ancient baobab trees — some over 1,000 years old — and the elephant herds that move beneath them in extraordinary numbers define the experience. Tanzania is home to the world's largest population of African elephants, and Tarangire holds the highest concentration on the Northern Circuit. The Tarangire River becomes the only water source for hundreds of kilometres in dry season, drawing lion, buffalo, zebra, leopard, and over 500 bird species. Packed lunch at a scenic picnic site; late afternoon exit to the lodge on the shores of Lake Burunge.
Insider Fact
During dry season (June–October), the Tarangire River is the only permanent water source for hundreds of kilometres — animals converge in concentrations that rival any park on the continent.

3Serengeti National Park — Arrival & First Game Drive
The drive from Tarangire to the Serengeti passes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area before the descent onto the plains. "Siringiti" in Maasai means "the land of endless plains" — and when you first see the Serengeti stretching to the horizon in every direction, the name feels inevitable. You arrive by late morning and begin your first game drive immediately. The short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti are prime cheetah territory; the river systems harbour leopard; the open plains deliver lion sightings with extraordinary regularity. Sundowners on the deck of Kubukubu as the plains turn amber at dusk.
Insider Fact
The Serengeti supports the highest density of large predators of any ecosystem on earth — over 3,000 lions, 1,000+ cheetahs, and countless leopards in the riverine forests.

4Full Day in Serengeti National Park
An early start — the bush at first light is unlike anything else. Lion prides move from overnight hunts. Cheetahs use termite mounds as observation posts. Elephants cross the plains in the cool morning air. This full day is yours entirely inside the park — your guide follows the wildlife, not a fixed route. Lunch at Naabi Hill Gate picnic site, with views across the plains. Afternoon game drive continues until the park dictates the pace. This is the day the 6-Day safari earns its distinction from the 5-Day itinerary — time in the Serengeti is the most valuable currency you can spend here.
Insider Fact
The Great Wildebeest Migration is a continuous movement — the herds are somewhere in the Serengeti ecosystem every single day of the year. Your guide tracks their position in real time.

5Ngorongoro Crater
A one-hour drive from the Serengeti delivers you to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. Stand here: the crater drops 600 metres below you, 20 kilometres across, its floor a self-contained world of lake, swamp, grassland, and forest. The descent begins on a winding dirt road into the caldera. Inside: approximately 25,000 large mammals — including the Big Five. The black rhinoceros population inside Ngorongoro is the most reliably viewable in East Africa. The Ngoitoktok hippo pool is the midday lunch stop. Flamingos line the soda lake. After the full crater game drive, ascent to Ngorongoro Farm House in the highland forest.
Insider Fact
Ngorongoro Crater was formed approximately 2.5 million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed inward — the walls it created have maintained one of the most extraordinary concentrations of wildlife on earth ever since.

6Lake Manyara & Return to Arusha
After breakfast at Ngorongoro Farm House, the drive north takes you through the agricultural highlands of Karatu and down to the Rift Valley floor, where Lake Manyara National Park sits pressed between the Great Rift Valley escarpment and the alkaline lake. The park's most famous inhabitants are its tree-climbing lions — a behaviour documented here for over sixty years. Beyond the lions: elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, and over 400 bird species. Game drive, picnic lunch inside the park, then north to Arusha. Your EWA representative meets you for a personal farewell.
